Flight Training

You are never too old to learn to fly and there is no maximum age limit to gaining a PPL but you must be 16 years or over to fly solo, although a licence cannot be issued until the age of 17. It is also mandatory that a Class 2 medical examination is passed with an approved Civil Aviation MEdical Examiner.

All flying tuition is carried out on the Cessna 150 two-seater aircraft and once you have achieved your PPL you can convert on to the larger four seat Cessna 172. The club is open 6 days a week and instructors are available to help you with all aspects of the course both in th air and on the ground. The club also stocks a wide range of books and equipment suitable for both the student and fully qualified pilot.

Your Private Pilots Licence (PPL)

Once you have had a trial flight we are sure you will want to continue to fly. To obtain your PPL you will be required to complete a further minimum of 45 hours flying, which includes a Skill Test.

In addition, you will be required to pass 7 ground exams, all multiple choice on Air Law, Aeroplanes (technical), Flight Planning and Performance, Navigation, Radio, Meteorology and Human Performance and Limitations. There is also an oral exam on the aircraft type in which you have learned to fly.

Once you have gained your PPL you must remain 'current' by flying at least 12 hours in the second year of a 2 year period.

When you have gained experience as a PPL holder you can progress to achieving an Instrument Meteorological Conditions Rating, which requires a further 15 hours flying instruction, which Hull Aero Club can provide.

The cost of your licence

To be able to fly aircraft owned by Hull Aero Club you must be a club member, either by payment of an annual subscription. or as a temporary member for a period of one month. All flying instructors retained are self employed and charge separately for their services.

We estimate the total cost of obtaining your PPL including exams and equipment will be approximately £4,000. The new National Private Pilots Licence, when issued will be approximately 32 hours. Further details on request. All prices include VAT and are adjusted as necessary.
